Garment Inspection in China

Check selected garments against your current tech pack, approved samples, size chart, tolerances, colour references and order breakdown.

A T-shirt, jacket, sportswear set and children's garment do not share one inspection checklist. Provide the actual styles, fabric references, size run, factory location and packing stage so the practical visit scope can be agreed before scheduling.

Service role

A useful apparel inspection follows the approved product specification

Garment inspection in China is an independent check of selected available clothing against a buyer's defined requirements. A meaningful comparison distinguishes workmanship and construction, measured fit points, material appearance, trims and labels, and the quantity and assortment prepared for shipment.

An approved production sample and a current graded measurement specification help avoid subjective conclusions. A single medium-size sample cannot establish acceptable dimensions for every size, and a product photo cannot validate hidden fabric composition or washing performance.

The inspection should document which styles, colourways, sizes and cartons were accessible. Results on sampled items do not represent garments that have not been manufactured, were excluded from the available lot, or require separate laboratory methods.

Scope considerations

What can be checked in a garment inspection?

Agree style-specific measurement points, allowable tolerances, sampling, available equipment and any handling constraints before the inspection.

Style and production identification

Compare SKU, design revision, colour, size, quantities and visible construction with the purchase order, approved sample and current tech pack.

Graded measurements

Measure selected chest, length, sleeve, waist, inseam or other agreed points with a defined method and tolerance for each sampled size. Do not treat one sample size as the entire size run.

Seams and stitching

Look for skipped stitches, open seams, loose thread ends, puckering, uneven topstitching, seam alignment and visible defects at relevant construction points.

Fabric and colour appearance

Observe obvious holes, snags, stains, shade variation, panel mismatch, printing or embroidery placement against agreed visual references; lab confirmation of fabric performance remains separate.

Trims and functional components

Compare buttons, zippers, snaps, drawstrings, elastic, hook-and-loop and approved decorative components. Try basic safe operation where feasible.

Fit, symmetry and finishing

Check visible panel alignment, paired sleeves, hems, collars, linings, pressing, shape and finish on accessible garments against buyer-approved references.

Care and identification labels

Review visible size tags, brand or SKU information, content and care-label artwork, hangtags and barcodes against the artwork supplied by the buyer; regulatory interpretation is separate.

Packing and assortment

Compare folding, polybags, inserts, hangtags, carton markings, case pack, size-colour ratios and accessible quantities with the purchase order.

Illustrative apparel discrepancies

Problems a clothing inspection can document

These are examples of observable quality issues, not case-study claims about prior YiwuQC assignments.

Measurements outside agreed tolerance

Sampled sizes differ from the grading chart at specified measurement points even though the style and colour look correct.

Open seams and finishing defects

Broken stitching, unsecured thread ends, puckered seams or uneven hems recur in accessible garments.

Shade or print inconsistencies

Panels or garments in the same claimed colourway show obvious shade or print-placement differences under the agreed viewing conditions.

Wrong labels or trims

A size tag, hangtag, zip pull, care-label version or button type differs from the approved bill of materials.

Incorrect carton assortment

Accessible cartons contain the wrong size ratio, mixed styles or missing packing items compared with the confirmed order.

Unresolved laboratory claims

A supplier describes fabric as compliant or colourfast but has not supplied relevant current evidence for the submitted material or production version.

Planning sequence

Plan a garment inspection around the buyer's size and style risk

  1. Send the production file

Provide SKU and colour-size matrix, latest tech pack, approved pre-production sample, point-of-measurement diagram, tolerance table and packing instructions.

  2. Confirm goods and site access

Identify which styles and sizes are complete or in process, which cartons are accessible and whether a measurement area and suitable equipment are available.

  3. Agree practical sampling and checks

Define the lot, inspected size-colour coverage, measurement selection, workmanship criteria, functional checks and explicit limitations.

  4. Review decisions and unresolved risks

Use the documented deviations to discuss corrective action and follow-up; keep lab tests, unproduced sizes and commercial release decisions separately identified.

Buyer inputs

Information to prepare

Provide what is available and identify gaps rather than allowing assumptions to become criteria.

  • Manufacturer or factory address and agreed production stage
  • Purchase order with style, colour, size and quantity breakdown
  • Current tech pack, flat sketches and approved sample revision
  • Graded size chart with points of measurement and tolerances
  • Approved fabric, prints, embroidery, trims and colour references
  • Care-label, size-label, hangtag and barcode artwork
  • Packing ratio, polybag, folding and shipping carton requirements
  • Known defects, test documentation and checks requiring specialist capability

Inspection evidence

Evidence that shows which apparel requirements were checked

The useful report separates measured fit, visible workmanship, assortment and packaging findings rather than reducing all quality questions to a pass label.

Style and size coverage

Identify checked sizes, colourways, quantities and the available lot, including any missing or inaccessible variants.

Measurement comparison

Record selected measured points, reference values, allowed tolerances and observed deviations where feasible and agreed.

Workmanship and trim notes

Describe visible stitching, finish, print, component and symmetry issues with representative photos.

Labels and packing evidence

Document accessible tag, artwork, barcode, folding, case pack and shipment-mark comparisons.

Outstanding evidence

Identify missing reference samples, unclear tolerances, lab-performance questions and unavailable styles without treating them as approved.

Buyer follow-up list

List observed deviations that need supplier response and any agreed reinspection or separate qualified laboratory verification.

Clear boundaries

What this service cannot prove

Inspection scope, size coverage, equipment and availability must be confirmed for the actual garment construction, location and order; specialised capabilities are not presumed.

Random samples do not prove every garment is defect-free or every untested size and colour conforms.

Visual fabric assessment cannot prove fibre composition, chemical safety, shrinkage, colourfastness or wear resistance. Qualified independent laboratory tests are separately scoped when necessary.

Market-specific garment and children's apparel labelling or safety compliance must be established by the responsible business and appropriate professionals; an inspection is not a certificate.

Shipment release, corrective action and acceptance decisions remain with buyer and supplier, not with the inspector.

Buyer questions

Garment Inspection in China FAQ

What should I send for an apparel quality inspection?

Send the complete style and colour-size list, graded measurements, permitted tolerances, current tech pack, approved sample, labelling artwork, packing requirements, factory address and production stage.

Can a garment inspector check all sizes?

Only the sizes physically available and selected within an agreed plan can be inspected. Specify which sizes and measurements matter most; missing sizes must be recorded as unchecked.

Does a visual garment inspection confirm fabric shrinkage or colourfastness?

No. These performance properties require appropriate material testing; an onsite comparison may identify visible differences but is not a laboratory result.

When should I schedule garment inspection?

An in-process visit can identify repeated sewing, sizing or finishing problems early. A pre-shipment visit can assess selected finished garments and carton assortments. Choose based on the decision you need.

Is AQL automatically the same for every clothing order?

No. Any sampling method, classification and acceptance criteria should be agreed for the accessible lot, buyer risks and current relevant sampling procedure. AQL does not guarantee absence of defects.

Does apparel inspection prove legal conformity for children's clothing?

No. Applicable safety and labelling rules, hazard tests and other legal responsibilities require product-specific review and often qualified laboratory evidence.
